Where Compete sits
This tab is the top of the ladder. Games played here are event games and league games — the highest source multipliers in the app.
It's also where you meet a wider range of opponents than your usual group, which is where the opponent multiplier becomes available. The two stack, and that's why organized play moves your rating faster than anything else.
Do you need it?
No. Plenty of people use Vallio purely for casual play — score your games, build your rating, chase milestones. That works indefinitely.
Compete is for when casual stops being enough: you want a bracket, a season, a standing, or a record against a specific person.
