Free vs. Champion
Vallio has two tiers for players: Rookie, which is free, and Champion, which is paid.
Rookie isn't a trial. You can score every match, build your rating, use venues and queues, chase challenges, post, follow people, join any competition and run your own — indefinitely, without paying.
The line is simple enough to say in a sentence: everything you do on a court is free. What Champion buys is the reading of it.

The honest summary
Champion splits along two lines: depth and scale.
Rookie records everything and shows you the recent picture — the last fortnight, your overall standing, the head-to-head record against everyone you play. Champion opens the archive and the analysis: every stat, both styles, the whole history, and the pattern behind a rivalry rather than just the score of it.
The other half is for people who run play rather than just show up. Hosting is free and always has been; hosting something bigger, or several things at once, is Champion.
Nothing that stops you playing is ever behind the paywall. Scorekeeping, queueing for a court, and joining a competition are free and will stay that way.

Which to start on
Start on Rookie. Play a few weeks. You'll know you want Champion when you hit one of two moments: wanting to see a number the app won't show you, or wanting to organize something bigger than a pickup game.
Neither is predictable in advance, and neither is urgent.
Two more tiers, later
Organizer and Enterprise are planned — the first for people running serious competition without a venue of their own, the second for venues. Neither exists yet, and there is nothing to sign up for.
Both will contain everything Champion does. Running bigger competitions will never mean giving up your own stats.
Pricing
Champion costs less bought on the web than bought inside the app, because the app stores take a cut of in-app purchases and a browser checkout doesn't. A lifetime purchase is offered on the web only.
